What Makes Lymphedema React: From Research to Quality of Life

A conversation with Dr. Spencer Gibson, distinguished Canadian lymphedema researcher

Interview hosted (and translated live) by Marie-Eve Letellier, PhD in Rehabilitation

March 19, 2026 at noon | ZOOM (in English and French) | Free event – Registration required

Lymphedema evolves within a complex biological environment. But what does it actually respond to? Which factors influence inflammation and the progression of chronic swelling? And how can scientific advances concretely improve quality of life? The most recent research on the cellular environment of lymphedema explores, among other areas, the impact of metabolic and nutritional factors, while other studies focus on potential targeted therapeutic approaches.

During this exceptional event, Dr. Spencer Gibson, Principal Investigator at the University of Alberta and Dianne and Irving Kipnes Endowed Chair in Lymphatic Disorders, will share key findings from his work and explain how fundamental research may ultimately translate into beneficial strategies for people living with lymphedema, lipedema, or chronic edema.

The interview will be guided by Marie-Eve Letellier, PhD in Rehabilitation, certified chronic edema therapist, clinician-researcher and skilled communicator, who will provide live translation while also helping translate complex scientific concepts into language that is clear and meaningful for patients. Our goal: to make this discussion accessible, balanced and practical, while also providing useful insight for healthcare professionals.

At the heart of this conversation:
• Which biological and environmental factors influence chronic swelling?
• Where does translational research currently stand?
• How can we distinguish solid scientific advances from premature solutions?

Please note: Dr. Gibson will not offer personalized medical advice, but will share general insights from his research, along with a critical perspective on their potential application.

Presented with the support of Bauerfeind, LAQ’s Diamond Sponsor for 2026.
