AGM Highlights – June 11, 2020

The Annual General Meeting for Fiscal Year ending March 31, 2020 was held virtually by Zoom on June 11, 2020. The following are highlights:


 Current Board of Directors - Dolores Steinwall, Rob Caparelli, Tony Wight and Charlotte Schultz.

 Support Staff -  Sara Waddell (Administrator  Rachelle Macdonald (Bookkeeper)

 New Advisory Committee Members -   Ann DiMenna, Sophia White, Jaclyn Jones, Janet Vanderveen and Tony Schultz

Approval of Resolutions - by electronic ballot in advance of meeting - (numbers 5, 6 and 7 were passed by the Board of Directors and approved by Members- copies scheduled to official Minutes):

  3. Appointment of Melissa Coulson as Chartered Professional Accountant for LAO YE 2020 Statements Approval

  6. By-Law Revision - Board Member Qualifications – as Per Schedule 2*

Former Board Members thanked -  Jaclyn Jones and Ana Stosic have retired from the Board 

Report by President (Dolores Steinwall) -  

Significant accomplishmentsduring past fiscal year:

- “Six Things a Patient Should Know About Lymphedema” card published

- E-Newsletter launched

- 4 successful fundraising events held

- Provincial Association Committee (PAC) established

Goals for current year:

-add Medical Advisory Committee

-review Compassion Fund with small task force of therapists for feedback prior to activating

-form small task force to launch support group for patients 

-organize fund raising events including virtual runs and walks in different locations

LAO Founding Members recognized - Cathy Cotton, Glen and Margaret Gagan, Ruby Kreindler, Pamela Hilliard and Kim Gagan

Review of Financial Statements for YE 2020 by Treasurer (Rob Caparelli) - Financial Statements for YE 2020 fiscal year were reviewed along with the Comparative Balance Sheet, Statement of Operations and Changes in Fund Balances, and Statement of Cash Flows. LAO had a strong financial year.   

Report on Infoline (Sara Waddell) - pie-charts illustrated recent demographics changes respecting Infoline callers. Voicemail engagements. Email and social media have almost doubled.

Report by Director Advocacy (Charlotte Schultz) - LAO is involved with a Masters Students assignment (at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, UofT to identify Infoline goals and scope of Infoline users to help improve the program. Once the project is approved, an implementation action plan will be prepared.

Report on Events (Rob Caparelli) -  several successful fundraising events were held (including Toronto Scotiabank Marathon – approx. $3,000 raised; Windsor/Lasalle Walk - $3752 raised; “Walk with Dee” - approx. $3000 raised; and Luigi’s Hockey Game in Ottawa - $2200 raised.

Report on Awareness (Tony Wight) - participation atevents allowed us to speak with patients, caregivers, and health care professionals and MPPs and share LAO goals – including Breast Reconstruction Day (Edwards Gardens); Florence Winberg Education Series - “Managing your Lymphedema” (Sunnybrook/Odette Cancer Centre; Mayoral Proclamations of World Lymphedema Day/Lymphedema Awareness Day (March 6) in 5 cities;  Information Booths at 14 Hospitals; and Queen’s Park Visit.

Question Period - Questions raised online by attendees were answered immediately; answers to others were posted on our website.

Special Guest Speaker -Dr. Robert Rutledge (Radiation Oncologist, Halifax specializing in breast, prostate and pediatric cancers and Associate Professor in Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University) gave informative and practical presentation (“How Understanding Your Brain Can Help Empower your Life”).

How Understanding Your Brain Can Empower Your Life


Dr. Rob Rutledge, MD, FRCPC

Dr. Rob Rutledge is a Radiation Oncologist in Halifax, Nova Scotia, specializing in breast, prostate and pediatric cancers. He is also an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University.

In 1999, Rob co-created the ‘Skills for Healing’ Cancer Weekend Retreats. These weekend support groups teach a powerful and integrated approach to the cancer diagnosis and ways to heal at levels of body, mind and spirit. To date, over 2000 people have attended one of 64 retreats in 30 cities across Canada and abroad.

Rob is the CEO and Chair of the Healing and Cancer Foundation, a Registered Charity that freely offers educational videos, documentaries, and live and webcasted seminars. He is co-author of the book The Healing Circle, which captures the teachings and inspirational stories from the weekend retreats.

Rob has received a Cancer Care Nova Scotia Award for Excellence in Patient Care, and Doctors Nova Scotia presented him with a Health Promotion Award in recognition of his contribution to physician health and health promotion in cancer patients.
